Coffee to the Community: South L.A Cafe

 ENGLISH     |      ESPAÑOL

With gentrification pushing Los Angeles residents out of their homes, South L.A Cafe is a safe haven in their South Central community. I had to visit when the word circled around Instagram about a community-based coffee shop in my native home of South Central.

Known as the "ghetto" of Los Angeles, several investors have refused to service the people of this area based on the tragic history of riots, gang violence, and more. After years of seeing no real progress for the well-being of the community, fellow South Central natives, Celia and Joe Ward-Wallace, decided to make South L.A Cafe a reality. The coffee shop is brand new but has already created a buzz around social media and encourages neighbors to get involved.

As for the ambience and menu, it is everything I ever dreamed of having as a teenager! South L.A Cafe brings a breath of fresh air and made me feel safe, tranquil, and right at home (I was home)! I ordered their matcha latte with coconut milk, a decaf cappuccino, a chocolate croissant, and a banana pecan muffin. Everything is fairly priced and the items I had taste of high quality. Being a vegetarian of 11 years, I was excited and proud to see they also provide vegetarian and vegan options.

Besides South L.A Cafe, Celia and Joe also own South L.A Market in the same shopping center. A small grocery store with affordable items. Unfortunately, when outsiders see progress in "affordable" communities, they immediately want to move in and take over.

Beautification vs Gentrification
Beautification is when the community comes together and takes care of their streets and neighborhood shops. They are the ones who decide what will and will not be placed in their neighborhoods. Gentrification is when communities do not fight back (or fight back too late) and allow non-natives to take over their area, raise prices, bring new people in and kick the original community out. I fear this happening with the rapidly growing success of South L.A Cafe.

While I was there I already overheard some people (not from the neighborhood) speak of how cheap the area is and how they can easily put up their own businesses. The sad irony of gentrification is that any of these people can call their shops "community-based". Outsiders are welcomed to these areas, but should not mistake the humbleness of the community for weakness. They should not see it as a hidden gold mine to make profit by stamping the words "community-based" on something that will only benefit them and throw the natives in the garbage.

I will always support my old community even if I no longer live there. I'm proud to be from this area and will stand with real community-based businesses. South L.A Cafe is well aware of what lies ahead and I hope the neighborhood prepares for what will soon hit, as gentrification already took over the closest South Central neighborhood of USC. May the community stay strong and continue to progress for more businesses like South L.A Cafe.

  1. Looks like a nice place, despite being in a traditional "hot spot" of negative reputation. I haven't spent more than a few days in a big city, but I did come across one street in DC that made me reverse directions.

    1. It definitely feels like a safe place that welcomes freedom of expression.
I've also heard some things about DC and how one should be careful in certain parts!

  2. Sounds like an amazing cafe! The baked goods sound delicious! That sucks that those people want to take advantage of the community. Usually, businesses like that never last because I think most locals know when businesses just want to make money and ruin the community. ♥

    1. Thank you! It really is. :)
The good thing is that more people from the community are coming together and creating businesses close to home that help others.
