Is PokémonGO Animal Cruelty? ☠

 ENGLISH      ESPAÑOL

The recent release of a semi virtual reality game PokémonGO has people asking again, "Do Pokémon games make children want to mistreat animals?"

Technically speaking, the objective is to catch every species of Pokémon, strengthen and evolve with fights, and become the very best (like no one ever was)! In one psychology article, it stated that "The only part of the issue that researchers do agree about is that violent media types are not the only cause of children committing violent acts. The involvement of parents in what their children watch, how the family interacts with each other, what the children are exposed to in their environment are also indicators of  how they will behave and what value system they will follow." Basically, watch your kids and take action if incidents such as violence on animals begin to surface!
PokémonGO can promote animal cruelty, or it can promote encouragement to explore for people with depression &/or anxiety. The Muncie Animal Shelter in Indiana is seeking "Pokémon trainers" to volunteer as dog walkers. Strangers are getting together in local parks and interacting. The kids in a Michigan Children's Hospital are motivated to get out of bed and find Pokémon in the building. It's not meant to be taken as a serious game against animals.

The real issues are causing car accidents, crossing into private property, and kidnappings through false "meet ups". Thankfully, the app was recently updated an lets players know to respect private property, not drive and play, and always be aware of their surroundings. As for avoiding theft or kidnappings, go to local meet ups in broad daylight and take a friend or family member along. Have fun and be safe!

      Which team are you in?

    2. I feel so conflicted choosing between Instinct and Mystic, so I opted solely on color (blue) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I noticed you're #TeamValor which would make us sworn enemies xD ... totally kidding, I hate rivalries and love you unconditionally!

btw this post reminded me of the other day: I was heading to a friendly gym to train and as I approached I could heard dialogue of someone taking it down. The gym went neutral for, at least, a good two minutes... I didn't snatch their victory away from them (cause that'd be rude) so I kept walking and saw it was just some kid! It was totally cool tho cause he's team Instinct and I felt a sense of comradery. Not only that but, he was with an adult male (presumably his dad) and explaining Pokémon GO to him. I thought it was really sweet and a prime example of how parents can stay involved/supervise their kids playing the game :-)

    3. You and I are simply friendly rivals now! Hahaha
      My husband chose Instinct. >_>
I notice they tend to wait a little before taking over gyms unlike Mystic & Valor.

And that's so sweet of you. :) I have a competitive itch in me but just like you I would never take someone else's winnings. It's also good to know that a lot of kids are interacting with their parents more through this game. I know some people who's parents have more Pokémon than them! xD

  2. It's so important! Growing up, my parents were the same way with my older siblings and I.

  3. I grew up when video games turned "violent". Doom, Mortal Kombat, and many others had angry parents blaming games for corrupting the young people like their parents had blamed rock and roll with them. I grew up having fun with them but I'm more of a pacifist as I can tell between reality and fiction.

I have heard of the pokemon animal cruelty thing before. It's often compared to the human-created fights between two roosters. My favorite college team's mascot is a Gamecock (university of south carolina) after the horrible sport. A few have called to change the mascot to a rooster to an eagle but it's never changed. And while it's a poor taste of a mascot I never really think about the connection until someone points it out similar to playing Pokemon.

There was a NFL player named Micheal Vick who was caught having a dog-fighting ring. He went on to still play football, he should still be playing football....in the prison yard.

    1. Same here. I remember playing Doom on the PC with my older siblings when it was first released and Mortal Kombat with my cousins. We all knew it was fake as well and none of us grew up to have problems with the law or aggressive fighting.

I can't stand rooster fights! In Mexico they tie a small blade to their feet so they cut the opponent when they jump. :/

I remember that case too, but unfortunately money can get people like him out of many situations.

  6. No, I don't think so. Pokémon and animals are so different, and ego shooter games don't really make people want to shoot someone!

    1. It's a shame that there are people who think otherwise. Most of us know right from wrong!

  7. No soy partidario de estos juegos, no me parecen nadan lúdicos, es triste que vendan por ser violentos, yo no participo ni lo descargo, lo tengo claro.
